The motivated runner vs the disciplined
Spicy email here, writing it on the plane on my way to Miami…
I look at the game of business as a long run.
An infinite run…
Say we have a set of runners, they are all ready to GO!
Some are motivated to blow past everyone else
Some know the drill and are prepared for the long miles
The run begins and everyone starts the sprint.
The highly motivated guys take the lead, they are completely focused on beating everyone else.
More well-trained/disciplined guys maintain a good pace and stay in reasonable distance from the motivated guys.
Now the motivated runners are focused on beating the others
They watch their opponent and how quickly they are going
Disciplined guys are focused on maintaining pace, making sure they are using proper technique, and making sure they are on target.
You’ll realize that 1/4 into the run…
The motivated guys start to lose energy and slow down the pace.
Now the thing is…
When the motivated guys start slowing down, they turn their heads behind their backs and focus their energy on staying ahead of the competition
The motivated guys are fixated more on how they can stay ahead of the pack, versus staying on pace.
Eventually, the disciplined guys pass the motivated guys because they stayed up to pace.
First lesson…
As an entrepreneur.
Once you take your focus to how you can stay ahead of your competition or making sure no one surpasses you is the moment you start losing focus.
You lose focus because your focus should REMAIN on the client’s wants and needs.
The disciplined guy is the one who is focused on the client and consistently pushes the business the right way.
It’s not about how fast you can run in the beginning.
But it’s how long you can maintain pace through that run.
Lesson 2…
Building a multimillion-dollar business is not just a matter of being SUPER motivated one day (Lol)
It’s about those daily actions that will compound into that HUGE result that you’re expecting
Funny enough the analogy of the runner is a very simple way to describe how you should function on a day-to-day basis.
But this is why your mindset on that run should change.
You might be that motivated guy and that’s great.
Having a motivated mindset is not something consistent, which is why when the business starts to become more challenging…
The motivated entrepreneur starts to slow down.
This is why I am so strict with my daily KPIs
Because to stay disciplined you’ve got to have targets that can be tracked so that you know that you are on course
Reaching your KPIs is you taking a step in the right direction in that marathon
Without measuring/tracking KPIs, it can lead you to miss key targets that should have been met in the day.
Do any of you have that same feeling?
You’re a hustler, you get a lot of work done, but by the end of the day…
When assessing the day and your progress, it merely feels like you haven’t walked anywhere.
You’ve worked, but no work on the business was done.
If you know what I mean…
I have experienced those kind of days
The solution to that is to set up systems that will keep you on pace for the marathon of life
I am not telling you NOT to look at every day as a rigorous challenge
Be motivated, and KILL the day!
But remember, what will take you to the result you’re looking for is based on the compounded work you do over time.
So make sure to set up daily KPIs so that you stay at the right pace.
You’ve got this man
